FAMILY UNCERTAIN

HEMILUTJANUS GRAPE-EYE SEABASSES

The genus Hemilutjanus contains a single species (H. macrophthalmus), found in the southern subtropical eastern Pacific and extending into the fringe of our region. The characteristics of this genus are sufficiently different from those of the Serranidae and other allied families that this genus currently is not assigned to any family.

The characteristics of the genus are as follows: Body deep, compressed; head compressed, pointed; mouth large, oblique, lower jaw projecting; upper jaw bone broad, with distinct accessory bone; teeth small, simple, on jaws and top and sides of roof of mouth; preopercle serrated; long gill spines; dorsal with X spines, anal with 3 spines; lateral line complete, follows contour of back; scales small, rough, on all of head and jaws.
