CATHOROPS

SEA-CATFISHES

Three pairs of barbells (on chin and both jaws); top of head rough, covered with thin skin; a narrow groove along top of head (except in C. dasycephalus), interrupted in some species; gill opening restricted to sides by adhesion of gill membranes to breast; gill rakers present on rear surfaces of first two gill arches (except in C. dasycephalus); teeth on roof of mouth at sides only, in two well separated patches, although sometimes touching, tooth patches considerably larger in females; jaw teeth in several rows, front teeth smaller than back, which range from conical to molar-like.

This neotropical genus contains at least 11 species, with 6 present in and endemic to the tropical eastern Pacific.
