Overview
Main identification features
  • body oval
  • ds separate; 1st dorsal fin : grey, white and black
  • pectoral past anal fin origin
Body oval; dorsal rays IX, 10; anal rays III, 8; lateral-line scales 35- 36; margin of bone under eye smooth; margin of preopercle serrate; body depth 2.2-2.3 in standard length; dorsal fins notched deeply to base and entirely separate; pectoral reaches past level of anal fin origin; lateral line very high on side, well above longitudinal axis of body; scales on anterior part of body enlarged, becoming much smaller on tail stalk.

Silvery white, often with golden tint; fins yellowish, first dorsal with grey base, whitish center and black tip.

Size: grows to at least 20 cm.

Inhabits sand-mud bottoms of shallow coastal seas.

Depth: 0-30 m?.

The Gulf of California to Peru.

There is not much knowledge of the biology of this species, aside from being found in coastal areas, but are very rare in coastal lagoons. It is commonly found in the discarded fauna of shrimp trawls (Ref. 95681 ).
