Body high, rhomboidal (height ~50% of standard length), compressed; head profile steep, ~straight; mouth strongly extendible, ends under front edge of pupil; lower border of bone under eye serrated; lower border of preopercle serrated; 14-15 rakers on lower arm of 1st gill arch; dorsal fin IX, 9-10, 2nd spine longest; pectoral longer than head, reaches past line through anal fin orgin, lower border concave; 2nd anal spine thick, long, a little shorter than 2nd dorsal spine.

Body silver, darker on back; thin dark lines along scale rows very evident on upper 1/2 of body; fins dark, spiny dorsal with thin black margin; inside pectoral base dark.

Size: 25 cm.

Habitat: in shallow coastal areas and lagoons.

Depth: 0-30 m?.

Southern Baja and the southern Gulf of California to Honduras.

Dorsal spines (total): 9 - 10; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10; Anal spines : 3; Anal soft rays : 8. This species is distinguished by the following characters: gill rakers on the lower limb of the first branchial arch 11-14 (mode 13, 12 in type specimens); lips small, not enlarged; pectoral fins extending to the third anal spine base; depressed second anal spine extends to caudal peduncle base (Ref. 94655 ).
