Geographic distribution
DISTRIBUTION: New Zealand: throughout the North Island, South Island, Stewart Island and the sub Antarctic islands. Australia: Victoria, Tasmania. At least in New Zealand, Frullania aterrima is particularly abundant in cooler, exposed habitats, e.g., in regenerating scrub of Leptospermum scoparium (manuka) on the frost flats of the central North Island and in stunted Olearia colensoi (leatherwood) forests at higher elevations.
