Main identification features
  • disc: rhomboid, width greater than length
  • tail: slender, with spines
  • large square head; notch and flaps in front
RHINOPTERA

COWNOSE RAYS

Disc angular, nearly twice as wide as long; head and snout strongly marked off from and raised above front of disc; snout forming pair of broadly rounded lobes separated by central notch; forehead concave, overhanging snout; eyes and spiracles on side of head; large plate-like crushing teeth on both jaws; moderate sized dorsal fin at tail base; no tail fin or fin folds; tail long and slender.

The genus, with 10 species, occurs in all tropical and subtropical oceans except for central Pacific; one is endemic to the tropical eastern Pacific.
